Le Carnaval des Compagnons
The Carnaval des Compagnons takes place in North Bay each winter. Inspired by the first official Quebec carnival held in 1953, a small group of local Francophones decided to bring a similar event to their hometown in 1963. Since then, North Bay’s Francophone population has been gathering every February for a week of snowy activities.
These activities include outdoor games, community breakfasts, and live performances to bring together the entire Francophone community in a celebration of the French language and heritage. The highlight of Carnaval is the unveiling of Bonhomme Carnaval, the shining mascot who appears at various activities throughout the week.
Bonhomme is a jolly snowman donning the iconic ceinture fléchée, a colourful sash that nods to the French-Canadian tradition celebrated during Carnaval. The person chosen to embody Bonhomme is sworn to the greatest secrecy—sometimes, even their families don’t find out until the grand reveal! Being chosen as Bonhomme Carnaval for a season is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spread joy and love, and is considered a great honour. Bonhomme is a beloved character in the community, and remains a symbol of everything Carnaval stands for: family fun, French-Canadian tradition, and Francophone pride.
Le Carnaval des Compagnons
Le Carnaval des Compagnons prend place à North Bay chaque hiver. Inspiré par le premier carnaval officiel de Québec en 1953, un petit groupe de francophones a décidé d’organiser un évènement semblable à North Bay en 1963. Depuis, la population francophone de North Bay se rassemble à chaque février pour une semaine d’activités enneigées.
Parmi ces activités se trouvent jeux en plein-air, déjeuners communautaires, et performances live pour réunir toute la population francophone afin de célébrer la langue française et son patrimoine. Le moment le plus important de la semaine est le dévoilement du Bonhomme Carnaval, la mascotte bien-aimée qui fait apparition à diverses activités pendant la semaine.
Bonhomme est un bonhomme de neige jovial qui porte la ceinture fléchée, qui rappelle la tradition canadienne-française célébrée pendant le Carnaval. La personne choisie comme Bonhomme Carnaval doit garder son rôle un secret absolu—parfois, même sa famille ne connaît pas l’identité de Bonhomme jusqu’au grand dévoilement. Être choisi en tant que Bonhomme Carnaval est une chance unique de répandre amour et joie dans la communauté, et est un des plus grands honneurs dans la communauté francophone. Bonhomme est un personnage adoré de tous et est un symbole de tout ce que le Carnaval représente: le temps en famille, la tradition canadienne-française, et la fierté francophone.

Learned by way of newspapers and television—kidnapping of Québec’s Bonhomme Carnaval. Criminal pursuits will follow. The convicts will be sentenced to prison in the ice palace of Québec for the duration of Lent. Jean Lesage.
This telegraph was sent in jest to accuse the North Bay Compagnons of “stealing” Québec’s Bonhomme Carnaval since North Bay’s Carnaval was the largest Carnaval celebration outside of Quebec.

Ce télégraphe a été envoyé en tant que plaisanterie pour accuser le Centre des Compagnons de North Bay d’avoir « volé » le Bonhomme Carnaval de Québec, étant donné que le Carnaval de North Bay était la plus grande célébration du Carnaval à l’extérieur de Québec.

Le Carnaval remains one of the biggest events bringing together all members of our community. It sparked a movement that helped define an identity for the francophones of North Bay, acting as a cornerstone upon which we built many other activities. The volunteers are an integral and precious part of the Carnaval contributing to the sense of what it means to be a community. Among all the singing and dancing and through all the different activities, a part that has become a very fun tradition, is the Bonhomme guessing game. Bonhomme is an honour that is given to a typically well-known person from our community to recognize them and their contributions; the fun is in guessing who that person might be, all week-long during the events.

Le Carnaval demeure notre activité de rassemblement communautaire le plus important. Il a enflammé un mouvement qui a défini notre identité en tant que francophones de North Bay. Une panoplie d’activités ont vu le jour au sein du Carnaval. Les bénévoles en sont une part précieuse et intégrale parce qu’ils contribuent au sens d’appartenance à une communauté vibrante. Parmi les chants, la danse et toutes les activités du Carnaval, la tradition de deviner qui est Bonhomme est l’une des plus amusantes. Être Bonhomme est un honneur typiquement accordé à un membre bien connu de la communauté et reconnait leur contribution importante. Ça commence toujours avec: « Puis, penses-tu que c’est une femme ou un homme cette année? »
