Curator’s Comments
This photo display was designed to show the life of teenagers during the 20th century. Twelve outstanding photographs, enlarged and framed, were displayed at the North Bay Museum in 2019.
Citizens of North Bay, past and present, were asked to submit photos of their teen years or photos from their children or parents. “In the moment” photographs were preferred over posed shots. Memories and identification information was welcomed. Exhibit content includes photo descriptions and comments by local artist and exhibit juror Arlie Hoffman.
Why teenagers? Hopefully senior visitors will remember their teen years fondly, and younger viewers will find that life was not so different years ago. The “message” of this exhibit? Ordinary life, not just politics and war, is history too!
Juror’s Comments
I am a fine art painter and a long time admirer of photography and all who practice these art forms. What good photographs or paintings share is a mutual intent in structuring the image. With this in mind, I accepted the invitation by guest curator Pat Moulson to jury the work. A large number of photos were assembled and capably organized by museum intern Claire MacFarlane. Immediately I realized a difficult task was ahead…to select a relatively small number of images for the final photo exhibit.
Gradually, because of necessity, the submissions were pared down to the required number of 12. This left uneasiness that so many worthy images were not chosen. However it was tempered by knowing that all submitted work will be on view by slide presentation for visitors to appreciate.
