The Community Today

Interior of the Synagogue, c.2005.

In 2007, the synagogue was damaged by flooding from a burst water pipe. There was $150,000 damage (mostly covered by insurance), but more money was needed to repair the roof, siding, and Torah Ark.

Very quickly, the neighbouring churches of St. Andrew’s United and the Pro-Cathedral of the Assumption offered financial help. The North Bay Mosque invited the Jewish community to use their facilities while damage to the Synagogue was repaired.

In 2008, the Municipal Heritage Committee designated the Sons of Jacob Synagogue as a Priority One heritage building.

The Synagogue needs help again, to repair and redesign the exterior of the building. Hopefully, the people of North Bay agree with Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe when he said that “all of the church congregations do not want North Bay to be without a Synagogue.”
