Welcome to North Bay
A CENTURY OF NEW NORTH BAYITES
North Bay welcomed many immigrants over the last century, especially after each World War. In some cases, tradespeople and craftsmen came alone to North Bay, bringing their skills to help build the city. They later brought their families settling in various downtown neighbourhoods. In subsequent decades, the city expanded to new subdivisions.
In the last decade (2015–2025) there has been an influx of immigration from India, eastern Asia & Africa as well as refugee families from Ukraine due to the war.
Harmandir Sahib (The Golden Temple)
This model is one of the keepsakes which Damandeep Singh’s family brought with them from India. It represents the spiritual epicenter for Sikhs. It is a place where Sikhs come to connect with their faith, seek spiritual solace, and engage in prayer and meditation.
The Golden Temple embodies the Sikh principles of equality and brotherhood. The four entrances to the temple symbolize openness and acceptance, welcoming people from all walks of life, regardless of caste, creed, or religion.
One of the most remarkable features of Harmandir Sahib is its langar, where free meals are served to all visitors, irrespective of their background. It feeds approximately 100,000 people daily, making it one of the largest free kitchens in the world. This practice highlights the Sikh values of selfless service and community.

Did You Know…
Sikh men wear turbans, also called Dastaars. The turban is much more than a piece of cloth— it’s a proud expression of faith, identity, and spiritual dedication. In Sikh tradition, the turban is seen as a crown, symbolizing self-respect and dignity.
The North Bay & District Multicultural Centre evolved from the work of the North Bay Newcomer Network, spearheaded by the Mayor’s Office of Economic Development. It became a reality January 1, 2008 and is a reflection of the changing face of the city.

Remember When…
“Moving from New Delhi (Capital of India) to North Bay was a journey filled with both excitement and uncertainty. We wanted to escape the fast-paced metro life and embrace a more peaceful lifestyle. While New Delhi was always alive with noise and traffic, North Bay offered the calm and tranquility we longed for. We wondered if we’d ever fit in, find friends and establish ourselves in such a different place. The cold winters were another challenge, but we adapted.
“Over time, the warmth of the community and the beauty of North Bay made it easier to settle in. The vast lakes, serene landscapes and slower pace of life grew on us. The fear and uncertainty gave way to a sense of accomplishment and we began to see that this quieter, more peaceful life had its own rewards. We’ve learned to appreciate the little things and learned that home is not just a place but a journey.”
